Seasons of Sport

Every year we have four seasons but in our house the seasons aren't known by the months of the year but by which sport is being played and viewed on the TV!  The Australian footy season begun last week as our summer finished.  Merv will watch every game if he has a choice.  His favourite team is The West Coast Eagles and he has the scarf, the jumper, the socks, the stubby holder and acrylic glass with logo.  When I redecorated his bedroom I bought him a huge framed photo of the Eagles 2006 Premiership win.  It hangs majestically over his bed.
Almost everyone has a favourite footy team, many of them passionate about their teams and players.  This can cause much rivalry and discussion!

Every Friday the footy begins at 4pm and Merv is showered, dressed and ready to sit in his recliner to watch whichever of the eighteen teams are playing.  What I like about the footy is to follow the game you have to know at least some of the rules and use a little grey matter at the same time.  It may not be considered educational but it's so much better than watching a meaningless movie.  The footy finishes with a spectacular Grand Final at the end of September.  The lead up to Grand Final results in just about everybody having a say and creates conversation and excitement.  Footy tipping gets bigger every year and so far Merv hasn't been involved this year but I am sure one of the groups he attends will soon have a tipping program up and running.  It is a part of Australian culture, not just entertaining but a season of bonding and at times dispute!
