. Dustin sent a message and said everything went well with Merv going into respite today and hopefully all went well at home while I was away. It is useless worrying about it, there is nothing I can do. I am going to have fun and enjoy before my journey at home continues again.
Life as a Carer to Merv and Melanie. Merv has Huntington's Disease. Big Bad Harry represents the things that come our way which we are unable to change but need to deal with. Some comedy and thought provoking comments and ideas.

Almost there
The bags are packed
The dishes done
The zucchini slice and meatloaf awaiting to be enjoyed
My suitcase by the door
My passport and tickets at hand
A coffee in hand before
Perth International Airport awaits me
I am already to go
I know once I click my seatbelt I will sigh a long sigh of relief
I am finally here
Ready to enjoy a holiday of a lifetime
I imagine arriving home to share my treasures, photos and videos
I can't wait!
But for now I will take time to, 'smell the roses.' and enjoy every moment

One More Sleep
Everyone is excited. The group is chatting and sharing messages. Only one sleep to go and this time tomorrow we are supping on seafood right on the beach in Mauritius! Sounds like heaven.
It rained here today and I spent time running out to the washing line checking sheets and towels. By some miracle I brought the lot in just before the heavens opened up and a downpour kept us inside. We have visited Merv's respite facility this morning and handed the Supervisor his meds and information as Dustin is taking him in on Monday afternoon. I had promised Mel lunch to celebrate my upcoming departure and we booked in at Mash Brewery in the heart of the Swan Valley. We have been there several times before. Merv enjoyed a wheat beer while Mel and I stuck to the trusty lemon, lime and bitters. My fish was overcooked but Merv delighted in his excellent fish and chips and Mel enjoyed a scrumptious looking vegetable stack. Mel and I enjoyed a brisk thirty minute walk this afternoon while Merv watched a favourite movie.
Why did I suggest to Dustin I would cook a Zucchini Slice and meatloaf before I left? I don't know, but I do know I am running out of time. Merv is packed and I am half way there.
I am guaranteed Wi-Fi in Mauritius but not necessarily in South Africa. I hope to keep the blog going during my holiday and add some amazing photos! Stay tuned.

Oh for a Butler!
If I had a butler
I wouldn't treat him badly
I would shower him (or her) with praise and cook pumpkin scones
I throw up my arms in despair!
Nothing I have done has gone well
The suitcases are half full and not yet complete
I am in turmoil with only a few days to go
Until I fly off into the wide blue yonder
Escape to Mauritius and lie in the bath
Drink cocktails by the pool and be pampered by staff
Come back to reality: there is more packing to do
Everything to do
Such little time and energy
I am like a limp doll in need of a multivitamin
I look all around and see all that is not done
Tomorrow will come and the horizon will clear
There will be more energy coming my way
But if I could choose
A butler I would employ to help me pack my case
And have me on my way
I wouldn't treat him badly
I would shower him (or her) with praise and cook pumpkin scones
I throw up my arms in despair!

Royal Show Fever
It's Royal Show Week, a time where the country comes to the city. Originally the show celebrated the country folk travelling to Perth and parading their livestock and horses, nowadays it more about show bags and entertainment! Everyday there are thousands of people both young and old who flock to the show.
Mel and I decided to spend our, 'Mother and Daughter Day,' enjoying the pleasures of the show. We bypassed the supersonic and teeth clattering rides in Side Show Alley, neither of us are in need of an adrenaline fix.
The train was jam packed this morning and we were seated opposite the 'Seniors/Mothers with Babies,' priority seating. A young man and his girlfriend were seated precariously in this reserved seating and were undecided whether to give up their seats when an elderly couple entered the carriage. I looked the young man straight in the eye and quietly said, "Yes you need to move," They gave up their seats and the elderly woman thanked them profusely for doing so. On the way home I witnessed a young man in his early thirties give up his seat for a senior lady, he even volunteered to escort her to his exited seat while the train was moving at speed.
The show, even with it's multitude of show bags and peddlers selling everything and anything, the country theme still holds true. I spoke at length with a lady who owns fifteen alpacas and recently began spinning her own alpaca wool. Mel and I were mesmerised with the old fashioned spinning wheel and weaving loom. She explained how to spin the wool at different thicknesses and how to work it on the loom. She was busy preparing the loom as we discussed her fascination for her craft.
Mel and I tasted and passed comment on the many free tastings in the pavilions. Everything from yoghurt to thick-shakes and tiny sausages.
We viewed the Rag Doll cats and an array of farm animals including new born Emu chicks. We missed the sheep pavilion due to Mel's allergy to wool. We checked out the vast array of lunchtime menus, many of them advertising deep fried everything. Therefore we were quite chuffed with ourselves after exploring all our options and ordering a salad and vegetarian burrito; a healthy alternative.
After lunch we led the assault on Showbag Alley before catching the train home again. I am pleased the Royal Show is only once a year!

My Big Sister
I am packing, shopping and making lists. I am on the run. There is nothing unusual about that, I often put myself under stress. There are only four days until 'D-day,' 'D' meaning departure date, on Sunday I will be on the plane heading west to Mauritius. Until then there is no rest for me and very little sleep. I toss, I turn, I close my eyes and pretend to sleep but alas it eludes me.
It appears there is negative energy in the air when I am preparing to holiday and even more so when I am actually relaxing with a slimy green coloured cocktail on my holiday isle. That is exactly what happens; Mel's life suddenly becomes a turmoil of concern and what am I doing? I have my head firmly buried in the sand, lazily sipping cocktails while relaxing in the sun!
My sister on the other hand is busy sorting out Mel; lending a listening ear and providing helpful advice. My sister cooks vegetarian meals for Mel and keeps her calm while sharing jokes to lift her mood. (I order another cocktail and move in the shade of a palm tree). Before I have even finished slurping the bottom of the glass, big sister has solved Mel's problems and concerns and all is good in the world again. (I decide to have a swim in the surf and get stuck in a rip, I wave frantically hoping someone will save me).
My big sister will once again keep an eye on Mel while I am away enjoying more cocktails. As always she will keep Mel well grounded and sort out all the hiccups. What Mel had thought was a mountain suddenly will be a molehill and she will smile. I begin to smile and the rip disappears and I am saved from certain drowning.
Thank you big sister for keeping an eye on Mel and showering her with love. You are much appreciated.

TripAdvisor Reviews
I love belonging to a community. I belong to my local community, it's where I live, where I shop, people I spend time with. I also belong to many other communities. There's the two carer's groups I belong to, I am accepted and never challenged. I come back time and time again because I give and I can take back. It's part of belonging to a community.
My family is also where I belong, a place to share, to be loved and not rebuked.
I was born with an innate need to research. I don't know why, I just know it's a hunger I need to satisfy. Before breakfast this morning my iPhone buzzed and TripAdvisor lit up stating 3613 readers have read at least one of my reviews. I am deemed a Senior Contributor due to my 24 reviews of a combination of restaurants, accommodation and activities. I love to travel and finding out what fellow travellers have experienced keeps me from making mistakes and provides information not always available on websites. Even if a few reviewers are having a whinge, the overall feedback paints a picture of truth. I have used reviews from TripAdvisor on all our trips in the last ten years but it also lends itself to my local restaurants and accommodation. I review on the good and the not so good to give a balanced picture. I know many businesses read the reviews and will 'fix up' concerns mentioned by travellers. When I return from my holiday I will be adding more reviews.
It's good to join others in helping our fellow travellers. Yes it's a global community helping each other in adventures everywhere.
